Ways To Improve Memory Function

ways to improve memoryEmbracing a healthy lifestyle can have a huge influence on our life, especially in regard to our memory as we age.  This makes it important to look for ways to improve memory function.  Wikipedia, in terms of psychology, defines memory as “an organism’s ability to store, retain, and recall information and experiences.”  In essence, our memory defines who we are.

A healthy targeted goal to strive for as we age is strive to keep our brain functioning well in order to help circumvent disorders associated with the brain, as one ages.  With aging, people’s memories tend to get impacted.  Difficulty often arises recalling valuable information or memories, especially in a timely manner. Here is a brief look at the brain’s functioning:

1.  The brain receives information.  It then processes the information and combines what it has received with the information already stored in your brain.  This is generally referred to as encoding.

2.  After processing the information the brain stores it.  The brain stores the information, or memory, permanently. It will reside there unless the brain malfunctions.

3.  The amazing ability of recall is a functionality of the brain.  Throughout our life, we will need to answer questions or deal with situations that will require us to recall information stored in the brain in order to derive correct conclusions.

Below are some ways to improve memory that can be of tremendous value in keeping the brain functioning healthy, especially as our bodies’ age.  These should be considered as valuable healthy living tips.  We have the ability to help improve our brain’s performance by:

a.  Engaging in processes, or activities, to continually learn new information.

b.  Strive to live a low stress lifestyle.  Make a conscious effort not to continually focus on problems.

c.  Engaging in physical activities that will help to promote blood circulation for the brain.

d.  Engage in eating healthy and providing your body with plenty of sleep.

Here are some tips to consider that will help you exercise your memory.  These ways to improve memory function can be helpful in improving the brain’s performance:

1.  Engage in writing notes to yourself.  When you want to remember something or need to do something, then write it down.  This process will help you in achieving your goals until such a time arrives when you no longer need to perform the activity, or will need to do it less often.

2.  Get plenty of rest when trying to learn new things.  If you are studying for a test, or other requirement, and need to retain the information, then getting plenty of rest should be part of the equation.  After you have rested, then do the same process again.  You should also get plenty of rest before taking the test.  This process will help your brain to better absorb the information you need to learn and will help you to retain and recall it.

Don’t buy into the concept that cramming to learn something works. Overloading the brain with too much information in short time spans is definitely not healthy.  When prepping for studying, factor in enough time.  You need to allow your brain time for rest, after focusing on a lot of information.  This is a helpful way to improve your memory function for increased performance 

3.  Engage in the process of visualizing things that are important and need to be remembered.  A good example might be the need to remember a lot of names in a short time period.  Try associating the people’s faces and their names on images.  This process should help you recall their names more easily.
